Sustainability Policy

At byHER, sustainability is woven into the very fabric of our ethos. Our commitment to sustainable fashion transcends the conventional approach to garment production, focusing on craftsmanship, longevity, and reducing the environmental impact of the fashion industry. As a slow fashion brand, byHER is dedicated to creating timeless, high-quality garments that celebrate the female form, crafted with care and intricate attention to detail, while honouring the traditions of hand-made artistry passed down through generations.

1. Made-to-Order Model

In order to combat the wastefulness of fast fashion and mass production, byHER operates on a made-to-order basis. Every piece is carefully constructed upon receiving an order, ensuring no stock goes unsold and no garments are left unused. Only what is needed will be made, minimising overproduction and excess waste.

2. Natural and Organic Fabrics

Only natural, breathable fabrics that have a minimal impact on both the environment and the health of our customers are used at byHER. Our collections are made exclusively from 100% natural fibres, including cotton, linen, silk, and silk/cotton blends. All fabrications are sourced from local Australian suppliers, primarily in Sydney and Melbourne. We actively seek out Oeko-Tex and European Flax certified organic fabrics wherever possible to ensure that our textiles are free from harmful chemicals and produced with minimal environmental impact.

Additionally, byHER embraces the use of deadstock fabrics, including silks and linens, which allow us to give new life to materials that may otherwise go unused. This practice reduces waste and maximises the potential of every material we work with.

3. Zero-Waste Commitment

Our brand operates with a no-fabric-waste policy. Every piece of fabric, no matter how small, is repurposed into new products. Off-cuts and leftover fabric from garment production are used to create silk bags, pocket squares, hair accessories, and even sample cards or product labelling. This ensures that every piece of fabric serves a purpose, contributing to the creation of new, valuable items instead of becoming discarded waste.

4. Versatility and Longevity in Design

All designs are intentionally crafted to be versatile, long-lasting, and often multi-functional. We focus on creating garments that offer diverse styling options, such as detachable, interchangeable, reversible and/or adjustable features. This encourages customers to invest in timeless pieces they can wear countless times, reducing the need for excessive consumption and disposal. Our evening wear range, in particular, is designed to combat the "wear once and discard" issue by offering bridesmaids, wedding guests, formal goers and brides-to-be, garments they can re-style, dress up or down, and wear for occasions beyond the wedding day.

5. Handcrafted Excellence

The quality of byHER’s garments is paramount. Each piece is meticulously handmade, with craftsmanship and attention to detail that ensures longevity. From bridal-quality finishes in intricate corsetry to hand-finishing techniques passed down from the founder’s grandmother and mother, byHER focus on creating garments that will endure the test of time. Our attention to quality craftsmanship ensures that each garment maintains its beauty and function for many years, making it a true investment piece in the wearer’s wardrobe.

6. Local Sourcing and Ethical Practices

We are deeply committed to supporting local Australian suppliers, with all of our fabrics sourced locally from trusted partners in Sydney and Melbourne. This not only reduces our carbon footprint but also supports the local economy and ensures our materials are produced under ethical and transparent conditions. Our commitment to fair labor practices extends throughout our production process, ensuring that every piece is handmade from start to finish within our studio, with care and integrity.

7. Educating and Empowering Consumers

At byHER, we aim to inspire our customers to make conscious, sustainable choices in their consumption. Through our designs, we challenge the culture of disposable fashion by creating garments that can be cherished for decades to come. We encourage customers to wear our pieces in their own unique way that suits their lifestyle and body, and to invest in quality over quantity. By focusing on practices and styles that endure, byHER aims to foster a genuine appreciation for conscious fashion that prioritises our workers, our consumers and the planet.
